The treehouse was a promise that Doherty's late husband Jack Chen made to his sons before his untimely passing in March 2013. But before he could build it, he was killed in a surfing accident. As a memorial to him, she had it built two years ago.
When the county sent her a notice about the structure being a code violation, she met with building inspectors, started an online petition and even collected 1,000 signatures of support from the community but it did not make any difference. She was gripping with the prospect of the treehouse relocation but that was a last resort.
Luckily, Doherty's neighbor contacted the media and got the attention of Orange County Supervisor Michelle Steel. Doherty feels that the miraculous change of events is all her late-husband's doing watching over.
